Mt Tam

I burnt holiday calories on my way to the office by taking the back way over Mount Tam.

Now this is a commute, 30 miles up 3,600 feet.

Advocacy

Elderly man (87) wedges car in the bike path over Corte Madera Creek/HWY 101.

why transportation alternatives are needed for elderly

London study: cycling up to 5 times safer than driving for young men.

“Perceived road danger is a strong disincentive to cycling" Mindell added. “But research regarding the safety of cycling tends to be distorted... with many substantially overstating cycling injuries.”

Don't worry mom, I'm not driving.

Gun control v.s. Car control.

This chart from CDC shows injury deaths by age. This was one of my first resources when I became interested in safety for myself and children after being hit by a car.

While you may not own a gun let alone a semi-automatic assault rifle, you probably drive. Take this opportunity to reaffirm safe driving habits. Don't pull the trigger on speeding or distractions from the road. Guns and cars are clearly both dangerous tools.

I was a good boy this year, so naturally I get $tuff.
All I want for Xmas is bike parts!

Muir Beach

Ride before rain.  With another storm coming I'm off to the headlands.

Ridgecrest Road Loop

A cool and clear December day.  I got out on the skinny tire bike.

My fitness level has been downgraded to "holiday cheer" but luckily the ocean vistas were in prime form.

Headlands

Aimless drifting through the headlands, beautiful day.

I taught a few classes at Short Elementary this week, glad to see our banner!

Tiburon Path

After my In 'N Out fix we walked along the scenic path to Tiburon and back.

I love seeing electric cars.  When they cut me off they don't also pollute my air.

Mt Tam

Rainy day ride with at least a dozen waterfalls along the route.

rigid single-speeds beg for winter riding

On the descent my brakes were underwhelming (wet) and I blew off the trail in a corner.  After plowing over a few invasive plants I kept it together, stoked!

20 miles over 2,700 feet in 2 hours.

Slacker Hill

Before the calories of the holiday I busted out a headlands loop to Slacker Hill.

I'll be back, despite the steep final push to the summit.  The view is best ever.

3-D Bike Map

Today we made 3-D bike maps at Miller Creek Middle School.

Then I headed over to Laurel Dell Elementary for our 4th grade bike safety class.

Tam Valley Elementary bikes.

30 miles of riding today and lucky enough to miss the scattered rain.

Warner Canyon

I've been exploring short loops for the winter season including Warner Canyon.

Mountain biking is year-round here.

The dirt is rocky and drains amazingly well. A little puddle here and there ain't so bad.

It's been raining for days and the trails are clean.

Bikelash

Doubt that people hate cyclists?  Just read the comments on any bike related story online.

The psychology of the backlash against bikes is simple, as are the people.

Undoubtedly they will learn but until then recognize their anger and find common ground.
Try to direct the hostility towards meaningful solutions!

Can you politely handle these common complaints about cycling?

1.  Why do bike riders get in my way, shouldn't they stay out of traffic for everyone's good?

2.  Why don't bike riders follow the law?

3.  Why don't bikers have to pay for the road like drivers do?

4.  Won't taking space away from cars cause delays for working people who need to drive?

5.  Why are bike riders such entitled jerks?

Corte Madera Summit

I marched my bike up to the Summit of Corte Madera Ridge (Christmas Tree Hill).

It really was a march at times because the summit is steep, but the view is great.

enjoy these vistas before the smog gets worse

I look at Mt. Tam and become inspired to ascend. When I do make it to the top I remember all the times I've looked up and feel satisfaction.  I love conquering my mountain!

not today tam

I used both GPS tracking apps, I noticed Strava shorting me miles on past rides.

Strava:           4.9 miles with 1,022 feet of climbing and max 30 mph.
Endomondo: 4.98 miles with 1,000 feet of climbing and max 26.3 mph.

Hmmmm... this might require further testing...
